What is Volume Profile?
Volume Profile displays the total volume traded at each price level over a specified period, shown as a horizontal histogram. Unlike traditional volume (which shows volume per time period), Volume Profile shows volume per PRICE level. This reveals where the most buying and selling occurred — key information about support and resistance.
Key Volume Profile Concepts
Point of Control (POC): The price level with the highest traded volume. Acts as a magnet for price. Value Area (VA): The range containing 70% of total volume. Price tends to stay within the value area. High Volume Nodes: Prices with above-average volume — act as support/resistance. Low Volume Nodes: Thin areas where price moves quickly.
Trading with Point of Control
POC acts like a magnet — price tends to return to it. When price moves away from POC, it often pulls back. Strategy: buy when price pulls back to POC from above with bullish confirmation. Short when price rallies to POC from below with bearish confirmation. POC is where most traders agreed on fair value.
Value Area Trading Strategy
When price opens inside the previous day’s value area, expect a range-bound day — sell at Value Area High, buy at Value Area Low. When price opens outside the value area, expect a trending day. If price moves into the value area from outside, it often travels to the opposite side — the “80% rule.”

Identifying Institutional Accumulation and Distribution
Large volume nodes forming at lower prices indicate institutional accumulation. Large volume nodes at higher prices indicate distribution. When you spot a developing volume node that’s growing over days, institutions are building positions. Follow their footprint.
Volume Profile on Indian Stocks and Nifty
